Sharing personal issues with your best buddy, family or an imaginary friend is one thing, and blabbering about it on the Internet is another. A post which you might think is playful, funny or has zero consequences, could be just the missing link for an online fraudster to complete his evil plan.
Here’s a checklist of things you must never share online:
# Your children’s photo and information that can personally identify them
This way you are keeping your children off the radar of online predators.
# Your phone number
When you make your phone number public, you are not sharing the same with your friends (who by the way may already have your number) but also creepy strangers, mad scientists, green-eyed exes, and other deranged, doofus characters.
# Your oops, yikes, and eew moments
As mentioned earlier, things that you might think to be cool, awesome or funny, may come flying right at your face later; and trust us, it hurts! So, keep intimate moments intimate, your drinking spree bottled, and other embarrassing moments (use your imagination) under the cloak.
# My boss is an @#$%&%#$, and my colleagues are his #@$%#$
Abusing your boss, colleague, ex, nosy neighbor, etc., on a social platform will only splash the sludge on your shirt. It is you who is spitting out the dirt here, not them. A better way of taking out the heat would be a one-on-one session with the person. [Not that we are suggesting you to get violent and abusive; but it is a better option, that’s all.]
# Login details, passwords, bank details, credit card numbers and so on
This should be a no-brainer. Cutting the long story short, never share such sensitive details on the Internet. And if you should give away such details, check every inch of the website and ensure that it is secure. Here are some tips to identify secure websites.
# Your breakups, more breakups and fights
Sharing sadness does make your heart feel lighter. But then, there is a proper way of doing it. Talk to your friend, your parents or may be Ted (your soft toy), if that helps. It is wise to keep such topics off the Internet. Making your hurt emotions public is most likely to damage your image, sever friendships, and give fodder to rumormongers.
# Your plans to get stuck in the Grand Canyon or some forest for a vacation
We always get super psyched about our vacations. And so we get this sudden itch of shouting out our lungs about where we are going and when we are going. Now, if you have someone responsible to look after your house while you are chasing sharks in the Caribbean sea, then it’s okay to share your vacation time sheet on the Internet. But if you stay all by yourself, then do all the online bragging about the holiday once you are back.
So, these are some of the many things that you should reconsider before presenting them on the platter to the Internet people. If you are interested in knowing about things that you should not post on Facebook, then this article is for you. Stay safe!
