Facebook scammers are once again exploiting a celebrity’s death. Former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs’ death news is the target just like many before him. Only a few hours after his death a Facebook page titled “R.I.P. Steve Jobs” is said to have gone up, with text claiming that 50 free iPads are being given out “in memory of Steve Jobs”.
People who clicked through were led to sites asking them to fill out online surveys or to sign up for free offers.
This is likely just the beginning of such scams that will try to make money from Jobs’ death. Please stay away from them and try to limit your link-clicking to reputable and genuine websites that do not claim to give you something for free.
The scammers goal is to drive more traffic towards certain websites. This is how the scammer earns commission for every survey completed, every product purchased and/or every account compromised. They also use such tricks to spread malware and to obtain personal information.
