The ‘Free Facebook Mug Scam’ is somewhat different from the previous Facebook scams that we have seen.
Similar to the previous scams, it redirects the users to complete online surveys.
In addition to this, it steals the user’s Facebook email ID and it also installs a malicious browser plugin. So by using the same method, the scammers try to install malicious files to the user’s machine.
If you click on the above link, it will take you to the page that is shown below.
It’s a well crafted webpage which looks similar to a Facebook page so that people will believe it easily. It says “Facebook is giving away ceramic coffee mugs free of cost” and then asks the users to click on ‘Continue’.
After clicking, the user will be redirected to the “https: // freemug.info/mug.html” page as shown below.
Then he will be asked to click on the ‘Order now’ button.
Clicking on the ‘Order now’ button will take users to the “freemug.info /verify.html” page where they will be asked to enter their Facebook email ID.
After entering the email ID and clicking on ‘Verify’, the user will be redirected to “https: // freemug.info/final.html”. Once here, an online survey will be visible and the user will be asked to complete it.
After analyzing the source code of “https:// freemug.info/ mug.html” we came to know that it contains script to install a browser plugin with the name Youtube Extension. After installing this plugin the sacmmers can redirect the unsuspecting Facebook user to any other scam in the future. We advise you to be wary of this well crafted scam.
