Simple Privacy Tips for WhatsApp Users

    Shares

The story of WhatsApp is every entrepreneurs dream scenario. CEO Jan Koum and Brian Acton, both formerly of Yahoo, founded WhatsApp in 2009 and never in their wildest dreams imagined how popular their service would become in a matter of months. WhatsApp is nothing but glorified text messaging, but its popularity and widespread usage cannot be discounted. Almost every functional smartphone today has a version of WhatsApp installed on it.

In April 2014, the number of WhatsApp users crossed 450 million, and they cumulatively shared 700 million photos and 10 billion messages every single day. All this without a mention of Facebook’s massive $19 billion takeover of WhatsApp in February 2014. Today, WhatsApp is one of the handful of services that define the tech industry and work towards changing the way our generation connects with each other.

Interestingly, WhatsApp’s largest user base resides in India and amounts to more than 50 million active users. With this in mind, we would like to post some security tips and advice for our Quick Heal readers, and inform them about some steps they can take to protect their privacy over WhatsApp.

Safety tips to follow while using WhatsApp

  • Never send private information like bank account details, PINs or passwords through WhatsApp.
  • Never accept files or begin downloads from messages sent to you by strangers or unknown numbers.
  • Never respond to suspicious messages that come through from unknown numbers.
  • WhatsApp as a service will never contact you through a WhatsApp message. Never trust any message that claims to come from WhatsApp and demands some payment for the service.
  • Some scams say they can connect your PC with WhatsApp and send messages from a desktop. Do not believe these as this is not possible.
  • Keep automatic downloads disabled so that you can always keep a check on what is being downloaded.
  • Avoid using WhatsApp when you are connected to open Wi-Fi networks. These are hunting grounds for malware authors and data sniffers.
  • Always keep an updated antivirus security solution installed and updated on your mobile device.

Tips for privacy settings over WhatsApp

While the aforementioned tips are useful for generic purposes, there are some steps you can take to protect your privacy over WhatsApp. Usually, messages can be received from anyone so this is a major loophole in the app. However, this is something that is a salient feature of the app, do not expect this to be disabled anytime soon. Nevertheless, you can take these steps to safeguard your privacy over WhatsApp.

# Step 1 – Go to Settings and click on Account.

Screenshot_2014-05-12-12-53-31

# Step 2 – Now click on Privacy.

Screenshot_2014-05-12-12-54-30

# Step 3 – Over here you can view and change settings for Last Seen, Profile Photo and Status. It is advisable that for all these 3 options, you select My Contacts.

Screenshot_2014-05-12-12-55-19Screenshot_2014-05-12-12-57-10

Unfortunately, blocking all messages from unknown numbers is not possible over WhatsApp. However, if you have received a message from an unknown number and wish to receive no more messages from that number, you can open that particular chat window and block the contact from there.

With these small privacy tips for WhatsApp in mind, you can definitely ensure that your usage over this app is as secure as possible. Additionally, by installing an award winning solution like Quick Heal Total Security on your device, you can also ensure that your smartphone remains protected against all kinds of mobile security threats. Stay safe!

      Hi Harshal,

There are some apps that do require your location as per the permissions that they ask for upon installation. If the app is popular and trusted like WhatsApp, there is no need to worry.

      Thanks.

This has been in the pipeline for Windows Phone for a while now, but we believe it hasn’t been implemented yet. We hope that they enable these settings for Windows Phone soon too, but we can only wait and watch.

      Hi Amit,

It is as safe as sharing pics and data on Facebook as WhatsApp is now owned by Facebook. So the comfort level you have depends only on you. Apart from that, if you are working on your mobile network’s data plan or a secured Wi-Fi connection at home or work, then it is safe to share info over WhatsApp.

I was going through your blog, after reading these last few lines- “Additionally, by installing an award winning solution like Quick Heal Total Security on your device, you can also ensure that your smartphone remains protected against all kinds of mobile security threats.” ; I could not help but comment here.
I was using nokia 701 before, I made numerous request over the last year for QH to add that phone model in PC2Mobile scan list. All requests and efforts got wasted.

Now I have switched to a windows phone.. I was wondering if QH will now launch antivirus for the nokia windows phone devices ( P.S. your PC2Mobile scan can not detect the Lumia phones, even under the windows phone option.)
Now that the number of people buying windows phones is increasing, i think they too might be interested in an antivirus solution for their windows phones.
Hoping to get a concrete solution to my issue.
    thanks.

      Hello Arpit,

Firstly, we apologize for the inconvenience you have faced by not having Quick Heal available for your Nokia device, and now your Windows Phone device. We appreciate that you have been suggesting to us that we cater to this market segment as well, but are apologetic for not being able to do so. To cater to all platforms is our ultimate aim, however, we also need to work out a feasible solution for the same. While I personally cannot comment on how soon this will happen, I am sure we will offer a solution for this platform sometime in the future. We hope that when we do, you forgive our past misgivings and install our software on your device.

With regards to the PC2Mobile device list, for us to offer support for any device, we also need support and cooperation from the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). In this case, Nokia. I can assure you that we have tried to gain support for all devices, but for some devices, this support is not always forthcoming from the OEM. Our comprehensive list shows that we have tried for many devices and have successfully gained support for them. For the ones we have not been able to support, it has been because the decision has been out of our hands. Again, we apologize for not being able to support you.

We hope that you continue to visit our blog and not lose faith in us. Hopefully, we will soon be able to offer you the services that you are seeking.

      Best regards.

      Hi Aamod,

WhatsApp Plus is a free version of WhatsApp that has been modified by an Android developer. There is no word from WhatsApp if this is legal. However, it is safe to assume that this version has not been released by the original developers. Though the app may be safe, it is not authentic. So we suggest that you do not use it. It does have additional features but these features can only be received by someone on the other end who also has WhatsApp Plus installed, so it is very limited. Moreover, you need to remove the original WhatsApp for this. So we recommend that you stay away from WhatsApp Plus till more is known about it.

      Best regards.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to do this. One option is to delete the numbers of people like your doodhwala and then make the DP and status visible only to your contacts. But if he is on your contacts list, then you make the DP and status visible to ‘Noone’. This is the only option.

I don’t think enabling auto downloading in Whatsapp will harm in anyway. The reason is Whatsapp till date only supports MP3 audio Wav Audio And Video Files like MP4 3GP and FLV. No MP3 song whatever the source is can ever be attached with a virus file its impossible. Video Files can be attached with viruses but its a very cumbersome and time consuming process. Most viruses comes from downloading PDF ODF or MS WORD EXCEL Attachments and Whatsapp doesn’t support them so no there is no downloading. And now whatsapp is using DB.CRYPT7 ENCRYPTION which is very hard to crack now..

My son tried whatsapp plus and the installation put off this function. I’ ve already re installed the whatsapp but the problem did not resolved.
This has become troublesome since my company use this particular program to add on new prospects for briefing and clarification and I cannot possibly known their name. I would be embarrasing and troublesome to save all these contacts and asking their name each and every time new addition was made

Is there any possible way to correct this? Thanks

However, if it’s a new device, or if you have uninstalled and then reinstalled WhatsApp, then you will need to alter the settings so that unknown people do not see your number.

      Hi Satya,

We don’t think this is possible. A third person who is not in the group cannot see such details about a group unless that information has been shared with him or unless he is in that group himself. If this were possible, you would be able to see all the groups of all your contacts. So this is not the case.

      1. Yes, when you send a WhatsApp message in a group, everyone in that particular group receives that message.
      2. Yes, even someone who is not an administrator in the group can send a message to everyone in that WhatsApp group.

  51. Hi Rahul, I recently got a Whatsapp from an unknown number. It contained a pic, that somehow didn’t auto-download (thankfully). I checked the number online and it shows its a Philippines number. After reading your blog, I changed my auto-download settings as well. However I am concerned as to what will happen if I download the image by mistake. Can it be malware (in the form of an image???). Please advise.

      Hi Raja,

It is advisable not to send private photos that include adult content or other personal data. It is not possible for someone at WhatsApp to go through every single picture that everyone sends, so that is not a concern for you. However, if your phone falls into the wrong hands or if your details are somehow leaked, then your photos will be vulnerable. So it is best to not share such photos in the first place.

      Hello Vijaysiva,

If you have sent a picture to someone via WhatsApp, it is safe and no external party can hack it. However, the risk is that someone can get that picture off your friend’s phone, or even off your phone. Moreover, in the unlikely situation that WhatsApp servers get hacked on a huge scale, then your pictures might end up in the wrong hands. But as of now, you have nothing to worry about as long as yours and your friends smartphones have efficient and adequate security.

      Best regards.

      Hi Sarah,

If you are using WhatsApp on a secured Wi-Fi network, then it is highly improbable that a third party can see the information you are sending or receiving. But, if it is an unsecured network like free Wi-Fi, then the chances of an attacker intercepting your information are high.

As provided on WhatsApp’s official website, the data send or received by WhatsApp is encrypted. For more information, follow – https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/general/21864047

      Hi Sravani,

No, unfortunately you cannot stop a message from being delivered once you have sent it. The double click does not signify that the message has been seen. It signifies that the message has been delivered. So the message has reached the phone, but there is no way to tell if the person has seen it or not.

      Hi Sarah,

Companies usually have tools and software in place to monitor the data that is transferred via their Wi-Fi connections. Without such tools in place, a lot of confidential or explicit content could get misused over the company’s Wi-Fi. However, they cannot monitor what each person sends all the time. They have policies set that usually raise a flag when something that is recognized as inappropriate is sent through. Hope that answers your question.

      Hi Ram,

Please find the answers to your questions below:

      1. Yes, Gmail and other Google services will collect your information from your mobile. This is inevitable and without signing in with your Google account, you will not be able to utilize your Android phone to its full capacity. This is not unique just for Android. All smartphones collect such information – iOS devices and Windows Phone devices as well.

      2. WhatsApp does not charge its customers as it’s a free app. They make money by sharing mobile numbers with advertisers and other parties. This is true but this does not take away from the fact that WhatsApp is a highly useful and hugely popular communication app.

      3. No, other websites cannot gain information from your mobile using your email address or phone number.

We suggest you install a free security suite on your Android like Quick Heal Mobile Security.

      Best regards.

Can someone help me how to remove or delete my whatsapp forever..

It is most unlikely that the person will be able to hack your WhatsApp data because you have added them to your contact list. Moreover, WhatsApp text messages are now encrypted and they cannot be used by anyone.

You can try Truecaller app to find the owner of the number. Also, we would recommend you not to call or text back to this number. You could also check your bill to see if calling the number has incurred any charges.

      Hi Bratin,

WhatsApp has their own private servers through which data is transferred. Now they themselves do not sort through this data, but if tomorrow suppose data from WhatsApp was hacked and stolen, then this private data could fall into the wrong hands. While private data is relatively safe through WhatsApp, you must draw the line somewhere. Do not send highly confidential data through platforms that can be viewed by others.

      Hi Swetha,

Your WhatsApp number is linked to your SIM card number, as provided by your service provider. If you change your service provider or number, your WhatsApp number will also change. Your personal contacts will not know this new number belongs to you unless they save this new number in their phone. Hope that helps.

      Hi Nivi,

Can you go back to the Settings page and see if the changes are reflected there. In the sense, does it now show ‘My Contacts’ for all the categories that you have chosen. Sometimes it so happens that the server connection drops for a few seconds while making the changes so they may not get reflected. Let us know if this works. If not, then maybe you should update or reinstall the WhatsApp application and see.

      Hi Canberk,

While we cannot comment on this, we can speculate and say that the data sent through WhatsApp servers is stored with them. They probably do not go through it individually but it is stored there. The possibility of this data leaking out is as much as that of data of any other service like Facebook or Google leaking out. We also cannot comment on whether or not this data is shared with third-party advertisers.

We don’t think it is possible for WhatsApp personnel to sit and view the millions of shared photos on a daily basis. However, the data is stored on servers and there is a chance they can get hacked or leaked, just like there is a chance that any other web service provider can get hacked.

      Hi Chitti,

No, a third-party cannot view all this information that is shared over WhatsApp. The company encrypts and stores all this data on their servers. However, if the WhatsApp servers suffer a hack, then this information may get leaked out. The chances of such a hack are the same as any other web-based service getting hacked. To be on the safe side, do not share highly confidential or private information over WhatsApp.

If you have already sent your photo to someone and they have stored it on your phone, there is no way you can delete it from your end. The only way to remove the photo from that phone is to physically delete the photo from that very device itself.

The old number may have been transferred to another user by your service provider. This is completely normal since they recycle numbers after they have been unused for some time. You can call them and get clarification on this matter. About your profile picture, we are not sure if this is possible. He cannot use the previous person’s profile picture as his own. Hi Sam,

The only way to check who you have sent a picture on WhatsApp to, is to open the chat window with that contact and see the media that has been shared. If the chat window has been deleted, then you will not be able to see this.

      Regards.

      Hi Ajay,

You are not at risk of getting hacked if you are sharing your WhatsApp number with someone. So you do not need to worry about that.

      Hi Marco,

Unfortunately, you cannot delete the message from the group. The people who have received the message now have it on their phone. You can only delete it from your phone.

    Hi Rahul,
Actually, I’ve been sharing private images and videos (very private) with my gf in the past. We actually don’t know about the storing of the data in whatsapp server.
Last time, I’ve sent one private video of 1 minute and some 25 second (75 MB actual size) to my gf. But the message was sent to her, it was showing of 15MB and 1 min 25 sec. But after the completion of download, it was of only 16 seconds (3 MB).

I am really scared god. What happened to rest of video ?? Is it hacked or leaked by whatsapp server ?? Or employee of whatsapp have get access to those pics and videos.
If this was happened, then our lives are finished.

    Please reply soon.

      Hi Kishan,

We cannot comment on what happened to the video and why the recipient only received it partially. This is an issue you will need to take up with the WhatsApp team itself. In the future, please refrain from sending personal information over WhatsApp as it can be intercepted.

      Regards.

  181. Dear Sir,
Would appreciate answering the following comment which was posted above wit no feedback from your side:

Hi, I was just wondering, if I sent images and videos (private, personal ones) to my bf, and I delete them after sending them, and he deletes them after seeing them, is there any risk of anyone else seeing or using these pics?
Basically, how long are images and videos stored on the Whatsapp server? And how likely are the chances that someone could access these private images and videos, even if we both delete them from our devices?
I only use Whatsapp at home (with our private Wi-fi) and I don’t connect to Wi-Fi networks in cafes, shops, stations, etc – only the private Wi-Fi at my university.

I don’t think there is some way to increase this limit. You can check with WhatsApp support about this as they will be the best people to guide you on this.

      Hi Simmi,

Please contact WhatsApp Support to resolve this. Usually, a WhatsApp account is connected with your SIM card and phone number so it is very unlikely that someone else can get access to this if your phone and SIM card are with you.

      Hi Avijit,

WhatsApp will not leak these videos and images deliberately. They do take steps to secure their servers and the private data of their users. However, just like every other cloud-based server, they can get hacked. If so, then your data may fall into the wrong hands.

  187. Actully you can connevt your phone to your PC i have done it, just go to the WhatApp website, click WhatsApp web, a QR code appears, open WhatsApp on your Phone, select WhatsApp web, Scan the QR code and WhatsApp is on your PC.
Bookmark the page when your contacts appear on your PC, as it does not put a shorcut icon on the screen.
To get this to work, keep your phone next to the PC, if your phone two far away, it wont connect

  189. Hi,

If one mobile phone made a call to another but had “own number sending” set to not send the callers number, can the person receiving the call (effectively from an unknown number) send a whatsapp message back, the person sending the whatsapp message would not know the number they were sending to but would it be possible as effectively the two hand sets had “shaken hands”, obviously whatsapp would be installed on both handsets prior to the initial communication.

      Hi Bill,

To send a WhatsApp message to someone, the sender needs a number to send it to. Or he needs an existing WhatsApp conversation to reply to. He cannot send a message on WhatsApp without seeing the number. Hope that answers your question.

      Regards.

  190. Maybe I can elaborate on the above comment, I had an overseas phone number, I no longer have it, the number has been re-assigned to someone else, they obviously have whatsapp installed on their device, my wife called the number by mistake (but she has her own number sending set to on, i.e. it does not send her phone number when she places a call), the person who now has the number that used to belong to me whatsapped her back straight away to ask what she wanted, is this possible if the person does not have her phone number?

      Hi Bill,

It is possible that the receiver of the call actually saw the number. Since he sent a WhatsApp message he could have probably sent an SMS or called back too, so he definitely knew the number. Perhaps the service being used to not show numbers does not exactly work all the time.

      Regards.

      Hi Syeda,

Please contact SIM service provider for this. Inform them that you have lost your SIM card and see if they require any documents to be submitted. The SIM can be deactivated by them only.

  193. Hi, do images and videos sent over Whatsapp have end-to-end encryption, as the messages do?

Also, I’m aware that once a message has been delivered to the recipient, it’s immediately deleted from the Whatsapp servers. Does this also apply to images and videos sent through Whatsapp – are they immediately deleted too once delivered to the recipient? If not, then how long do images and videos stay on the servers for?

      Hi Bijal,

Please check the storage space of your device and try clearing the cache as well. Since you send a lot of images, your phone’s memory could be full. WhatsApp is a pretty resource intensive app and could be taking up a lot of space on your device, thus slowing it down.
