Beware of “Your Unread Messages Will Be Deleted” Facebook Scam!

This is a precautionary blog post for our readers, especially those who use the social networking site Facebook.

An old online scam seems to have started doing fresh rounds on the Internet. Online scammers are sending emails to users claiming that their unread messages will be deleted from their Facebook account and urge them to view their notifications.

Unread messages will be deleted soon

These emails appear to have been sent by Facebook Administration, and notify users of their inactivity in their account.

Here’s what may happen if you click any button or link in such emails:

– Redirection to websites that may try to sell you products via credit/debit card transaction.

– Redirection to websites that may steal your personal or financial information.

– Redirection to compromised websites that might automatically drop a malware on your system.

Advice for our Readers

– Do not trust any unwanted or unexpected emails

– Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments embedded in such emails

– If you have any concerns about your Facebook account, log into the site by typing the URL in the address bar

– Always verify such information from multiple sources before acting on it

– Spread the information among your family and friends who use Facebook

Stay safe!

          Hi Darshan,

First of all, it is always safe to stay out of trouble. So, we would recommend you not to try accessing strange or unofficial URLs of any site.

Secondly, even if typing a fake URL takes you to a phishing site, Quick Heal will restrict your access and block the site.

Thanks BRO! Yet to know, if such redirection (by any sites aswell) goes to any online shopping web and thereafter purchasing occurs by netbanking or debit/credit card under 3d secure system, is there any risk??

    Reply
    • Rahul Thadani Rahul ThadaniOctober 15, 2014 at 9:22 AM

      Hi Rajeev,

Yes there is risk involved here as one can never know which site one is on. Creating a 3D secure system can easily be achieved by malicious parties and creating fake pages which look real is one of the simplest things to do. So it is best to not carry out financial transactions on pages that you are redirected to from clicking on a link somewhere. Instead, visit that link on your own through official channels. It will take a few seconds more but it can potentially save one from disasters.

      Regards.

      Hi M K Pradhan,

Since it was just an ad, you need not worry about anything. Most websites on the Internet make use of visual and banner ads and this is a huge source of income for them. You can use a pop-up blocker to avoid greater threats. But seeing banner ads is not going to cause any harm on your machine.

      Hi,

Yes, usually bigger corporations have plenty of safety policies in place to keep your information safe. However, bigger entities are also targeted more frequently and intensely by attackers. So the information stored there is never completely safe.

    1. I USE ANDROID MOBILE. AND USE MOBILE QUICK HEAL IN IT. IT KEEP GIVING PRIVACY ADVISER WHEREIN I CAME TO KNOW THAT MOST OF ANDROID APPS CAN ACCESS MOST OF THE DATA OF MOBILE HAND SET. BEFORE INSTALLING THE APP TAKE ALL THE PERMISSION AND IF DO NOT GIVE PERMISSION ,APP FAIL TO INSTALL. LIKE WHATS’UP IT TAKE EVERY SHORT OF PERMISSION.

    2. IN VIEW OF THE ABOVE ,I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS ,REQUEST ANSWER IF PHEASIBLE :-

Q.1. CAN ENCRYPTION OF MOBILE DATA PREVENT THE APP FROM ACCESSING MOBILE DATA ?

Q.2. IS THERE ANY WAY BY WHICH CERTAIN TYPE PERMISSION OF PARTICULAR APP CAN BE DENIED LIKE ACCESS TO CONTACT NO OF PHONE AS IS THERE IN BLACKBERRY ?

Q.3. WHICH OPERATING SYSTEM IS MORE SECURE WHICH DO NOT ACCESS THE DATA OF MOBILE BY SERVER -BLACKBERRY OR WINDOW OR ANDROID OR ANY OTHER WHICH YOU KNOW ?

PLEASE ADVISE ME SINCE THESE SECURITY ISSUES BOTHER ME.

      Hi Chander,

      – Even if an app accesses your data, if the data is encrypted, it won’t be of no use for the app.
      – As far as we know, Google apps do not have the facility to partially grant permission.
      – Latest operating systems are usually more secure than their predecessors.

    • Hi Waseem,

Check for any unknown addons installed in your Firefox, Chrome or IE browser. Remove them if there are any. Also, check for any unknown program in your control panel and uninstall them if found any.

You can also turn on pop-up blocker in your browser, and install AdBlock Plus to block pop-up ads.
