How to recover your money if your bank account is hacked or your card details are stolen

In this blog I will be focusing on the ways to strengthen the possibility of recovering your money in situations where your bank account is hacked or your credit card or debit card details have been stolen and misused. I will not be talking about how to prevent a bank account from getting hacked because we have discussed it at length in various posts. First of all let me tell you that the bitter truth is that most of the victims do not get their money back. But there is prevention and there are ways for a cure. So instead of crying over the spilled milk one needs to find ways to recover or salvage. After going through several case studies I thought of putting these steps together so that a victim knows what should be his/her immediate action when someone steals money from the bank account. In this post I will be referring to only those financial frauds that are done online. I will not be talking about frauds resulting because of physical loss of credit/debit card or ATM cash withdrawals.

If a bank account is hacked and the hacker/cybercriminal starts making online purchases using the stolen card information, bank account user name, password and/or PIN most of the victims expect the banks to repay. The banks however, refuse to help the victim on the grounds that the transaction was done with the actual card and the exact password and PIN was entered. So no matter how hard you try to convince them, it just amounts to a lot of frustration. One should understand the basics here, the bank is right at its place when it is refusing to pay. Since the money is already gone from the account to the merchant as legitimate credentials were given, if the bank agrees to refund it will have to bear the losses. Bank will always try to put the blame for card fraud on you. Usually they will redirect the victim to go to police for further help.

From my opinion police will also not be able to help you much in this case as often such financial frauds happen far away in a different country. It is quite difficult to track down the person or group that has scammed you without the help of law authorities in several different countries that transaction might have routed through. In most of the case studies of such financial fraud that I have seen, the victim often wastes lot of time in going to bank and police back and forth.

When your bank account gets hacked and money gets transferred online one should follow the steps given below to avoid further losses:

  1. Contact your bank and first block your bank credit/debit card.
  2. If the bank account is hacked immediately after you have done some online transaction from some PC, then first scan and clean your PC with latest anti-virus scanner. This is to get rid of any rootkit or key logger that may have been installed on the PC and which would have compromised your login details and sent it to the hacker.
  3. Reset your login password, pin, security questions answers.
  4. Verify your contact details like address, phone number are not changed by the hacker.
  5. Report the scam to right authority in the bank.
  6. Report a fraud to local police station.

What to do to recover lost money from hacked account:

In case of online transactions we have a fair chance of recovering/blocking the transaction if we act within 24 hours from the date and time of the fraudulent transaction. Most of the victims miss out on these important steps and hence are unable to recover any of the money they have lost. When a hacker/cybercriminal hacks the bank account and has access to user’s login name, password and PIN they start making online purchase and money transfers immediately.

They try to get the maximum amount out before user blocks the credit/debit card or changes the bank login details. So what one should do along with the above given steps is to observe the fraudulent transaction details carefully. For every transaction the bank provides very limited but important information of the date, time and the merchant id/string on which the transaction was performed. For example in one of the cases that I studied and was able to successfully recover the money for the victim, the fraudulent transaction reported by his bank was as follows:

SC3245244     22/08/2013      VIN/GYMBOREE.CO/2433423432323233/o      DR      3894.64

The SC3.. indicates the transaction ID followed by transaction date, then the Merchant ID clubbed with some unique string for transaction. This is followed by type of transaction DR indicating as debit and the amount. The key is to reach out to the fraud handling department/authority of the Merchant in 24 hours giving details of transaction that was fraudulent. No merchant would like to do business with a stolen card. They will readily block the transaction and revert the amount. This will ensure that you get the money back in your account. However, this is possible only if the merchant has not delivered the goods or process the transaction completely. This usually takes more than 24 hours.

In the case mentioned above, when I searched the Internet for Gymboree I was able to locate the merchant website. I asked the victim to contact the merchant. When the victim contacted the merchant through their website and gave details of the transaction it was confirmed by them that the transaction had taken place. The victim then convinced them that the transaction was fraudulent. They asked for the card details and when they were convinced they promptly blocked the transaction and reverted the amount which reflected in victim’s bank account in a couple of days.

Every victim may not be lucky as in this case but one can always try to reach out to the merchant through whatever possible way and give them the real picture. The chances of you getting your money back then become stronger. In some cases like money transfer to individual through PayPal or some other benefits it is bit difficult to get back the money. But if the cybercriminal does online purchase of some items/services then there are high changes of blocking the transaction and getting the money back.

To recover money lost in 419 scams

In case of scams like 419, where the victim himself transfers the money to the cybercriminal, the money can be recovered if he/she acts fast. For example if you transfer money to the scammer by say Western Union or MoneyGram and you realize that it was scam in less than 24 hours you have very good chance to get your money back. You just have to reach out to the right person from help desk of the money transferring merchant and in this case Western Union or MoneyGram.

    • Dear Ajay,
I can understand your reaction. The truth is we were able to recover money in two of such cases. In case of identity theft there are two types of frauds One which the hacker/cyber criminal will try to use the stolen information for cash withdrawal and the other where the hacker just has intercepted your card details while doing online transaction (through compromised website or a infected computer). In the other case the hacker is somewhere else and most probably can be in some other country. They try to use the card for online transactions through some online selling portals (like amazon, jabong.. etc). It is possible to recover the money spend on such online transactions by contacting these online shops and convincing about the fraudulent transaction.

  7. Very Good information. I think this should surely help the victims in future. One of my friend recently had such experience of money hacking from his bank account, but he could not do anything other than informing bank and reporting to police. But the Police officials here were very much adamant to launch and FIR. This is a long story, and till today as it has been 3 months but he has not got his money back.
Anyways, thank you very much for the information.

  11. Last year I have purchased a cake for my wife (who was in USA that time) from mumbai. I did the online transaction through credit card. The transaction was successful. But during transaction they have not asked for otp or any password. After 2 days, I had received a msg on my mobile regarding transaction of 200 $ through my credit card for a vendor (supplying valves) located in third country. I have contacted the credit card company and asked to immediately block the card. I have explained them about hacking my card. They told me that if the valve supplier claimed for the payment, then only we can take the action but help less at that moment. Fortunately that valve supplier didn’t ask for payment.

I reported the matter to the bank immediately and the transaction was blocked. As the used currency was different and also due to full support from my bank i was able to recover the full amount

My friend was having two Debit cards and he used only ICICI card when to withdraw money from ATM. He was having SBI card also and un-lucky part was both cards were having same pin.

Within a span of few seconds his SBI saving a/c was debited nine times and he lost Rs.90000/- where SBI is not willing to give CCTV footage and they are showing only some part of footage to him.

Can this be term as fraud? If so how to tackle? Police are not taking complaint SBI telling you took the money.

I suspected, while they were asking about some confidentials details, which bank never ask, so I refused, but they threatned me to block my account, I didnt give any details. After 2 days i got an SMS about some failed transaction attempts, I called customer care, they told me it was done by them, just to check my security features, next day again I got failed transaction SMS. But after some minutes I got transction message amount of Rs. 2000. I called customer care and informed, and request them to block the same, as my limit was Rs.100000. They informed 3 transactions were carried out within few minutes, before blocking the card, result, I have to pay Rs. 6000, which I never used. Bank informed me, it was done from Pakisatn. Next day it happened with my Saving Account, with same bank, around 20 transactions were made within 40 minutes, while I rushed to bank, while transactions were on, Chennai, Mumbai, Benglore was also contacted by Delhi Branch, but they failed to stop the same. My Card was lying at managers table, but both were helpless. Its cost me Rs. 21000, untill it was blocked, otherwise cost may be higher, as it has amount in Lakhs, including FD’s.
I lodged complaints with local police station, at cyber cell, at bank, but still I lost the amount, bank never helped me, its a terrible experience, both accounts were with HDFC Bank.
I had all evidences, before happeinings, during happenings, telephone call voice recording, SMS’s, but all were failed. Its my story sir, you are right, but I got terrible experience in 2011.

    • Sorry to know about your loss. As mentioned in the blog if the fraudulent transaction is taken place online and has taken place recently (less than 24 hours) the transactions can be reverted by contacting the merchant to whom the payment was done. In other cases you will have to take help of local police.

    Dear All,

It was also happened with one of my friend in Chandigarh. He was in New Delhi for his official meeting. suddenly he received a message from his bank that he has made transaction of Rs. 20000/- on his credit card. after few minutes he received one more message from the bank that again one more transaction has made.
He immediately called his bank and blocked the card. Then he came to Chandigarh and visited his bank. He has to do lots of formalities to prove that he has not made these transactions and he cant pay amount of Rs. 40,000/-. After 10 to 15 days it was realized that his card details has been stolen from one of the petrol pump in Chandigarh where he use to feel petrol in his car regularly. then the bank launched the complaint against this incident and the amount was not recovered from my friend. Here my friend was lucky that bank has supported and not taken any amount from him. but be aware about these kinds of frauds.

Here I just like to suggest you that whenever you do any transaction on your Debit or Credit card be present still your transaction completes.
because we don’t know who is going to stole your card details.

have happy transactions on your cards.

Now the bank promised to make an enquiry and after sometime claimed that the transaction has been genuinely done . The bank claims that it has some proof. How to challenge the incorrect debit and how to prove the wrong debit ?

    2. On an earlier occasion also – a cash withdrawal by HDFC cr card of Rs.10000 from ATM of other bank was challenged as the money did not come out of the ATM. Yet the banker HDFC after making his own enquiry said that cash was withdrawn . How to prove that money actually did not come out of ATM ?

    • To answer your queries one need to have a look at the transaction details as shown in your bank statement. For your query on how to prove is that this has to be banks duty to prove that the transaction is done by you when you are rejecting it. You need to file police complaint against bank claiming that you have not done the transaction. But for all this time factor is very important.

All these transactions were made online. On enquiry I found that they were made outside India and without password authentication, which I was informed is not necessary if one uses it outside India. How do these happen?

    Reply
    • To answer your query of how do these fraudulent transactions happen is already given in the blog. In your case it seems that your card details had been stolen online (may be when you had been doing some on-line transactions). This can happen through various means like phishing (visiting fake website) or if your system is infected by malware that captures your card details while you do the transaction online.
Your above bank statement shows that all these fraudulent transactions were taken place in the month of July. Had you contacted the respective merchants at that time you would have got most of your money refund back by blocking the transaction. You have to react in 24 hours’ time.
The transaction details show that few of them are payment gateways like PAYPAL, PAYZA.COM and Probiller.com. These merchants do respond to such fraudulent transaction claims and block the transactions if we contact them immediately. If the money is not gone to hacker it can be blocked. It takes some time for money to reach the hacker.
What you can do is you can still try to contact these merchants (specially PAYZA, Probiller) and find out if the transactions went through. Like if somehow they later realized that this transaction was a fraud they also block it but such amount stays in suspense account until someone claims it. Try to contact their support and find out if these transactions went through and tell them that it was your card that was used fraudulently. Its almost impossible to get the money now but never know you may get lucky. For Probiller visit https://probiller.com/support, for Payza visit their website and find their support page. You can try this with all the merchants in the transactions.

    Hi friends,

I would like to share a incident happened with my brother’s Standard Charted Debit Card, this happened in Mid 2011, he had done a online purchase 1 year back when he was in USA, that was the only online purchase he ever did, all of a sudden one day he started getting a message one after the other of Rs3000, then Rs4000 is deducted, in total around Rs15,000 was deducted, we immediately contacted our bank on phone banking and blocked the card and the account. The transaction took place in some other country which we never heard of! Bank promised to give us our money back, but in installments. In a span of 3months we got 90% of our money back.

immediate action was the best remedy for us. I hope this helps you all.

    May God bless you all,

Reportedly, Vodafone Germany has been compromised by hackers, exposing sensitive and personal information of about two million customers. This information includes names, addresses, date of births, and even bank account numbers. The authrorities concerned have said that, more critical information such as credit care detials, phone numbers, and passwords are safe. It is suspected that an internal server on Vodafone’s network was compromised for this hacking attempt.

  33. It is very difficult to get through the current law system to recover our hard earned money. What I could see in Mr Sant Ram’s case is that bank also didnt do much to protect or stop the transactions from taking place which is not right. Also I would like to point out that we should not leave our account dormant or stop using it for any time gap. At times such accounts also get cleaned up and we come to know only when we once upon a time like situation decide to go and check the account status.

Also I came across some random issues where the ATMs are not supposed to place the camera facing the ATM screen and it should be facing the user and behind the ATM screen.

In the present age of online banking activities where our details can be easily available to the hackers through various bugs, spyware, malware, etc. we should be very vigilant at all times to safeguard our earnings so that no one can fleece us and take away our money.

thank you sir.. for your sharing innovative research on online frauds and also for giving a good prophylaxis{which means preventitve treatment in medical language).and also learnt from you that online transactions are not completetly secured and also mobile banking is also so dangerous because its a latest feature that all banks provide, but mobile banking service is also enough for hackers to gain completete acess. because most gsm phones are strictly vulnertable to hacking if these phones are not strengthen with antiviruses and their respective updates also sms from banks also provides enough confidential informations about the its customer..so one best way is to always keep in mind that you have to become more and more careful while onlinebanking and mobile banking

  43. I do agree that Bank will pass the responsibility on the VICTIM to pay the amount, which is NOT AT ALL FAIR, as HOW COME THE HACKER CAN ACCESS the BANK DOMAINS for CVV passwords, PIN, 3D Secured Passwords, which are directly related to the final security levels of the Bank Domains.
Also these passwords were also not visible while feeding the characters as they are quickly converted into “*****” (STARS). That means the Bank Domains are not secured enough, despite these the Banks Claims best Security systems they have, thus BE-FOOLING the Customers. Refer to the cases of recently hacked Bank Accounts of Mumbai Police in SBI & Indian Army account holders in Axis Bank, where the Banks has re-paid the money back to all its Account Holders, whose money was hacked through On-line transaction.

We would advise you to follow these steps:

      1. If the bank account is hacked immediately after you have done some online transaction from some PC, then first scan and clean your PC with latest anti-virus scanner. This is to get rid of any rootkit or key logger that may have been installed on the PC and which would have compromised your login details and sent it to the hacker.

      2. Reset your login password, pin, and security questions & answers.

      3. Verify if your contact details such as address and phone number have not been changed by the hacker.

      4. Report the scam to right authority in the bank.

      5. Report a fraud to local police station.

  47. Sanjay,

Very useful tips. I just lost more than 98000 INR from my bank account. I got multiple SMSes in my mobile within fraction of a second and the money was gone. I immediately called the bank up. But they just blocked my debit card and told my dad to lodge a police complaint. This is so frustrating. The bugger has done 13 transactions to syphone the money and the trend is quite predictable as he has tried out with $1 transactions inbetween. I read in different sites in internet, Federal Govt has streamlined the process so beautifully making Banks equally and responsible and accountable for the loss and have defined SLA for responding to the distressed consumer.
The transacation log say “VIN/BEN PORAT Y/201311290442/0”. Can someone explaing how can I find out the merchant’s site?

  50. Thank you for vary useful information. What I do not understand is whay RBI is not making it mandatory for all card issuing authorities to issue all credit and debit card with the photograph of the card holder. Further, I have also observed that no merchant outlet varifies the signature on the back side of the card with the signature which a person puts on the invoices and other papers. At present any person can use any one’s credit/debit card very easily. If photo ID cards are issued and if the responsibility of varifying the signature is put on mechant outlets I think such frauds can be minimised.

  51. My brother has just last month moved to Canada to pursue a job there, working hard non-stop since he was 16, earning over £10,000. A Month out there and he feels lonely so his girlfriend tries to go out there to help him, she gets denied at the gates at the airport, so he tries to buy her a flight to Canada by going to the Canadian airport, the tell him his visa is UN-usable and tell him he is a illegal immigrant, and so not understanding what is going on he tries to book a flight out of there to come back to England to find out what is going on, he ‘tries’ to buy a ticket thinking no problem as he had £10,000 in his bank account, his card gets DENIED and they tell him he has no money in his bank account. So he is stuck in a country where he has only been for a month and has no money, his phone is out of charge and we have no way of contacting him. So please, tell me, how do I help him. He doesn’t deserve this, he does nothing wrong, works around the clock since he was 16 and someone has had the BRAINS to STEAL £10,000 of him, now i’ll ask the police and they’ll offer no help, just carry on being FAT useless idiots, talk to the bank, blame it on him, the money stealing novices! The world is sure not fair, and I Tell you this and I mean it, one day I will find who did this and make this most likely FAT non-sociable person pay for what he has done to him! And one day in the future do other peoples jobs for them in helping the DECENT civilization. respond to this email, many thanks.

  52. Hi Sanjay,

I’m an NRI and have lost INR Five lakhs last year due to some unauthorized ATM transactions happened from a country I never visited. Its clear that my debit card details were skimmed and being used to make these cash withdrawals. I have approached the bank’s branch, regional office and even the corporate office but didn’t get any positive feedback. Lastly a letter was sent the RBI ombudsman’s office in Mumbai and this also not entertained saying that transaction are happened from a place which is not under their jurisdiction.

Kindly advice me on the chances of getting my money back and on whom to approach now…

I like an idiot shared my details like CCV and OTP , few seconds alter 15,000/- was debitted from my account. I know this is totally my fault and i am responsible as i have shared the details. But is there anyway to recover my money or stop the transaction.I blocked the card and contacted the bank but they told me that nothing can be done. The police as usual was laughingly telling me to go to a stationary shop for lodging the complain, when i approached a senior official ,he told me to go away and not waste his time.
I am totally clueless as to how to proceed with this since the bank said it will take weeks and police is not helping.

      Hi Rekha,

Yes, with all the details of a debit card, anyone can make online purchase without the card physically present with them. However, most online transactions require the user to authenticate himself/herself with an OTP (one time password), which is sent to the user’s registered mobile number. So, without the registered mobile number, the online transaction won’t go through.

  57. I just arrived in Chennai,India 2 weeks ago..
About a week later I went to the ATM machine to withdraw some money at a local bank with my visa card. Yesterday went to do the same but from a different ATM machine only this time when I got my slip the balance was completely wrong. Showing half the amount of what was supposed to be there. So I quickly went online to check my bank balance only to realize debit amounts in my account I had not known about totaling to almost $4000/-. I immediately called my bank in my home country and explained to them what had happened to m with checking account balance online through my bank is that the bank can even take a week to update and bring your account balance upto date. So I immediately asked her to give me the correct balance of my account and from $8000/- my account has been drained to about $250/- of which I managed to withdraw yesterday. Worst part about all this is that my bank says they can’t do anything so my money is gone. But the worst part is that I’m in India for medical reasons and the money was for paying medical bills for my dad.

      Hi Ketan,

If these transactions have been carried out from your debit card, you need to immediately call ICICI Bank and block the card so that further debits cannot occur. You need to then speak to the customer service center and inform them that these fraudulent transactions have taken place. You would also need to contact the service team of PayTM and MobiKwik and inform them about this.

Unfortunately, you fell victim to a phishing phone call. Provident Fund transfers only happen once you submit certain forms to your organization. You should have not given your card details over a phone call to an unverified person in this manner. dear sir, thank you for your blog.On 4th May I booked a movie ticket with ticketnow.com.Next day ,on 5th May I received bank message that online purchase has been done.Realizing that it is a fraud,I searched for ICICI bank customer care number, called them and blocked the card. But in this period of 5-8 minutes, three more transactions happened with TCGPLAYER.COM and I lost around Rs.33000. Then I went to bank, taken statement from them and visited the police station to file a complaint and get an FIR.But no body was interested to take such kind of complaint. Then I have done some internet search and found your article most informative and useful. As per your suggestion,I contacted TCGPLAYER.COM within 4 hours by E mail(no phone no.available in their website).I explained the problem and asked them to refund my money. They promptly replied and within 4 days I got back nearly 30000 RS.
As you have suggested, first block the card and then call the seller at the earliest.Once again thank you.

I rushed to ICICI bank and spoke to the staff and the manager about it. when they checked the transactions were made in Canada and the debit card which was used was my previous debit card which is invalid coz I have got a new debit card from ICICI bank few months back. but still the transactions were approved on that card which is disgusting. how can ICICI bank approve the transactions on the card which is not valid anymore in their records. I have filed a complaint in my nearest police station in bandra Mumbai also. and now the ICICI bank is saying it will take them min. two weeks Max. three months to credit the amount back into my account. I’m curious will they really credit the amount or not?kindly suggest what should I do.

It is good that ICICI contacted you and that you have already filed a complaint with the police. It is hoped that your money would be returned to you as soon as possible. Hi Ritik,

Thank you for your question. IP addresses can be traced but there are several softwares that are easily available which can mask the IP address of a machine. So this process cannot be relied on blindly. Moreover, if the location of the perpetrator is in a foreign country, several international laws and legal issues also come into the picture. Same is the case with tracing of phone numbers. So, these cases need to be treated as unique every time they occur and there is no one fixed way to tackle all such incidents.

The merchants can refund the money if a compelling case is made. If it is proven beyond doubt that a transaction was fraudulent, they have to refund the money. But again, this is highly subjective and depends on a case to case basis.

      • My citibank creadit card hacked by someone on 12th july’2014 and he did three online transactions in USD /GBP currencies. Within 3 hours of transactions i informed citibank regarding fraud happened and asked them to stop payment to merchants.BUT citibank ignored my requests and paid to the merchant. In my case the problem is merchants are fake as their sites are either not up or credentials given are wrong. So i cant think of getting refund from the merchant asthese sites are made for Fraud purpose (looks like).

After 3 days i got new card reissued to me and to my surprise i used that card only once and again the same hacker did one more transaction on new card on 22nd July’2014 (i am saying that the same person as the merchnat is same whose site is not up and running for shopping) .

Citibank is not listening to us and just saying that as these transactions are done using IPIN so we cant help you.

Citibank is not at all coopearting. Even for second Fraud we informed bank within three hours of fraud happening.

We are still struggling to get our money back. But i can say is Citibank is hopeless bank and doesnot care for their customers.

Secondly, have you approached the police yet? Filing an FIR may seem like a tedious job but it will certainly help in this matter. We suggest you do that ASAP. Also, please contact the Indian cyber crime cell for further assistance as they look into such cases in detail. Here is their link – https://cybercrimecomplaints.com/cyber-crime-cells-india.

Hope this helps and you are able to get your money back soon.

          Best regards.

  81. My ATM cards got stolen from my car.
I came to know about it only when the transactions were made.
I had 7 cards and transaction was made from all 7 cards. Each from a different location almost simultaneously.

Now i have blocked my cards.

I want to know how have the thieves been able to withdraw money from all atm cards each having a different PIN altogether?

Can I get my money back?

      Hi PPG,

We are sorry to hear about your situation. Firstly, yes you can get the money back. For that you need to contact your banks and the police as well. Since the transactions have almost all been made at the same time, it will be a bit easier to prove that this is not humanly possible, especially if all the transactions were from different locations. However, you will need to chase the authorities for this. Secondly, in the future please do not carry so many ATM cards with you. Try to carry only one which you will use for your day to day expenditure and keep the available balance here not too high, so that your loss will not be high in case of theft/loss. We cannot comment on how the attacker managed to crack 7 different PINs, as there are many different techniques used for this purpose.

We hope you successfully manage to reclaim your money.

      Best regards.

Due to failed transaction of amt Rs. 612 by ATM ( actually which was approved by Axis payment gateway but failed to redirect to merchant site). I immediately lodged a complaint ( upto this every thing was fine)
later i got a cal from someone(As a consumer. forum care) who assured me to refund & asked all ATM details including PIN ( at 1st i doesnt agree to share my PIN but convinced as he had made a Missed call from my ATM TOLL FREE NO.+18004252910, I have knowledge that no bank asks PIN, but fell to his trick)
i lost 5000 (as 2 equal parts) within minutes ( Sms alerts). (this was happened during night)
i called him next day mrng at 1st he received my call( i asked his name & place , he was dumb)but later placed busy tune.
i googled for mobile tracking bt not get exact details.
i found the transaction on my net banking portal, which is as follows:
    1. POSTXN/04-08-2014 19:16:45/22316851 amt Rs.5000.( actually in two halves with a gap of 2 min).
please help me the way atleast to trace. even my amount looks somewhat less, most people ignore these as small amts. this favours these fraudsters to continue with small amts to be on safe side as no one complains & mostly ignores to take risk with police.
i want to catch this fraud.

      Hi Saurabh,

Please do not respond to such calls and do anything they ask you to do. If you are in doubt, visit your bank and ask them face to face if there is some issue with your ATM card. If your card validity is close to expiration, you will receive official notifications from the bank and not random phone calls such as this. If you have given out your card details, please block the card immediately.

You can view your account statement to see the name of the store. If your card details have indeed been stolen, please report this to your bank as soon as possible and get the card blocked. Also, for a refund of a fraudulent transaction, you will need to resolve this with your bank. You should also approach your local police station so that you can convince the bank about the genuineness of your situation.

Today I received 5 SMS saying that I made a debit card purchase. Firstly 62.89 rupees were deducted and reversed twice. After that 13054 got deducted immediately. I have not made any debit card purchase recently (at least in the 3 months). I only use online banking and never used debit card number or cvv to pay for my transactions. Still I don’t know who someone can clone or get my debit card details and do such fraudulent transactions. I immediately called the bank and blocked my card. They said their fraud investigation team will look into this and get back to me.

    • If someone knows your card no, PIN and CVV, you should immediately change the PIN number. The person who knows these details can easily create a similar fake ATM card and use it to withdraw cash. Cash withdrawal is difficult to catch. This information can also be used for online shopping and payments. The only solution would be to get the card blocked and get a new card issued. It is always good to use chip card as it has additional 3D password/PIN which you need to supply at the time of each online transaction. If your card has already been misused by someone in that case please read the blog carefully, I have given some suggestions on how to try to recover the money.

It seems like somebody has duplicated my debit card and used it to purchase something amounting 65000 from another country. I am clueless how this can happen. The bank people said it might be a case of Skimming as the transaction is not done through online. Initially the bank had suggested not to file an fir in Cyber Crime Police station as my online account has not been hacked and its a case of probably skimming. Also they told me that amount will be credited back to my account in 7 days after some initial investigation. But again I got a call from the bank after 4 days saying that I need to file an FIR since this transaction is done from outside of india. Can I file a FIR now? what step I should take next? As per RBI rule bank should return my money in 7 days as these is no fault of mine. But the customer care people told me that rule prevails only if fraud transaction happened within india. Not sure what is the correct rule. Please suggest.

      Hi Rohan,

Firstly, we regret to hear about your case. The bank seems to be doing all in their power to rectify this. However, you should file an FIR as soon as possible. You have lost money through theft so no matter what happens, you must have an FIR. Whether the bank needs it or not does not matter. We are not sure what rules apply if the fraudulent transaction has happened outside India, but this should not change anything. Approach the cyber crime cell as well and get their guidance. The bank is faultless here really, but they are the ones who need to compensate you no matter what they say.

We wish you all the best.

      Hi Arun,

Banks never call their customers and ask for personal details such as these. This is a tip that all banks and security advisors give out on a regular basis. Via emails or calls, no bank will ever ask customers for these details.

Right now, you need to visit your local police station and file an FIR immediately. Also contact your bank and see if they can do anything about this. We are sorry to hear about your case but you need to act fast to recover this money.

After two months in my addon card i recived another fraud transaction of Rs 230 , which then i called bank to block it.

In this case, since you have been trying all possible steps and also been waiting for a long time, we suggest you approach your local police station and file an FIR. Then you should visit the cyber crime website and file a complaint with them. And you should also contact the customer court for poor support from your bank. Approach all the authorities possible, as only then will the bank start taking your case seriously. The amount involved is not small and you deserve a refund and further compensation for your troubles.

I went through an online fraud on 4th sep 14 and I read this blog just a few minutes after blocking my card. I immediately searched the websites and contacted their customer care. I had lost 20,795 rupees and at first I thought it was gone for good. But in just a few days the websites returned all my money. I didn’t even have to prove that the transactions weren’t made by me. They said that they did an investigation and found that the transactions were fraudulent and so returned my money immediately.

So I want to thank you a lot for such a useful blog post. I’m more convinced then ever that in such cases there is no use of banging your head against police and bank customer care employees. Instead try to contact the websites. That seems to be the best solution but you have to do it as soon as possible.

I just wanted to ask you a question about this whole scam. The four transactions that were made from my card were on dating sites. I don’t understand why would a hacker try to buy dating site subscriptions from my card? Isn’t there some way for the hacker to get cash or get the money transferred to his own account? I just don’t understand what the hacker got by sending my money to these dating websites.

I have a conspiracy theory though. I think that many websites hire hackers to hack into accounts and make purchases from their website. If someone asks for their money back, they promptly return it saying that it was a fraudulent transaction. But I’m guessing 8 out of 10 people don’t think of asking the websites. They just end up arguing with the banks. In such cases the websites get to keep the money. Do you think this could be the case?

I’m sure about a similar strategy used by almost all phone companies in India. They automatically activate value added services on the phones of those customers who they think are illiterate or poor. So whenever the poor guy gets a recharge, money is debited from his phone. This happened to me with BSNL. At first I didn’t do anything coz it was just 8 rupees. But then it started happening again and again and in total 100+ rupees were cut for several value added services that i never subscribed to. Finally I went to their site and found the user manual and it was written clearly that value added services can’t be started without the consent of the user. So I wrote a big email to the head of complaints department in my city. Immediately I got an apology and they returned all of my money in installments. But there must be so many people who just don’t understand what is going on or just don’t complain.

Sadly in today’s world companies don’t find anything wrong with breaking laws if they can’t get caught. If they can exploit a loophole they have no moral objections to it. Do you think this hacking attack on my card from these dating sites could be a similar case?

      Hi Aditya,

Thanks for your email and sharing your experiences and feedback.

It’s definitely plausible that the hacker in your case was working in league with the website itself. The fact that they readily returned the money to you certainly points in that direction. However, this is a rare instance. In most cases that we have seen, the websites and companies take a lot of convincing about fraudulent transactions. Especially if they are e-commerce websites because in that case they face a loss of money and the shipped goods. So as you have mentioned, it is helpful to contact the companies directly as soon as possible. But in most cases, getting an immediate response is tough. So one should contact the bank and the police as well. After all, this does qualify as a case of online theft and crime.

A lot of unfair practices do occur in several industries and unfortunately, there are not many people like yourself who take the effort to try to resolve it. The reason companies get away with such activities is due to the negligence of the consumers. So it is always good to spread awareness. We hope that you continue your work to show others the way in this manner, and also hope that you do not have to go through incidents like the one you have mentioned again.

      Best regards.

Your blog has been valuable in information and also confirms the reality that getting back lost money is not going to be easy.
My case is, my icicibank account has been misused for 2 fraudulent transactions of 43000/- each total 86000/-. It is an internal icici bank fund transfer to two accounts of different branches in Mumbai.this has happened on 09/09/14 and I realised on 12/09/14.
I realised the fraud only after 3 days because I did not receive any SMS or email alert regarding this.
I jus logged into my account today and got this shock and rushed to the bank where such customary complaint session and then filing an FIR with the police was done.
Now the bank is so discourteous and jus asks me to wait for a response from them when I am asking whom to contact next.
I have not shared any of my banking details with anybody. I do not do any internet transaction at all.my debit card was intact with me till I blocked it and discarded it this morning.
I am still wondering how this could have happened without the debit card, OTP etc?
I am totally devastated. Pls can you help with some information as to how I can pursue this?
This is a clear case of bank’s internet security compromised or some internal hand in it.
If the bank does not respond properly what is my next course of action?

    Hey Sanjay,

First of all, thanks for sharing this important information.

I am a student. Recently, I am encountering some problem with my SBI online banking. Someone is trying to login my SBI online account. Every time my account is being blocked for the day due to three wrong password attempts. It happened 3rd time today (07-01-14) within 5 days duration. I come to know about this everytime immediately by the SBI message on my mobile. Although in between I changed my password also. But I don’t want any misfortune to happen. Can anyone suggest what should I do next to avoid any misshappening?? I haven’t shared my password or any other details with anyone. Is there any means by which I can trace from which place or IP address this unauthorized attempts is being made???

I would be extremely helpful if anyone suggest me something.

      Hi Sandhya,

We would suggest you to immediately contact your bank regarding this matter. If someone else is trying to access your account, it is clear that they are not aware of the correct password. However, they might be knowing your user id. You can request your bank to change your user id, if it is possible.

    KA:- Mr. Sanjay
    Dear Sir,
My father recently(09-Sep-2014) faced the issue that some one made 13 transaction of his pnb saving account by using his debit card details. My father immediately block his ATM card from customer care but during that he loose approx Rs 55000 from his account used for online shoping. We all family members put our best efforts to identify the sites/ Merchant used for online shoping with help of pnb cyber cell. Finally we get the details that online shoping was done on the following sites:- ccavenue.com, ptmcash.com,ebs.com. After contacting with customer care of all the sites(After a lot of follow up) all sites has given confirmation mail that all transaction made by using my father debit card details are stopped & money will be returned within 5-7 working days.

Till here every thing was fine. But after waiting of approx 20 days when we do not received the money back we asked from the customer care of the sites, all sites revert that while refunding process they are facing transaction error due to myfather ATM card used for these transaction is blocked. We confirmed that we have issued new card from PNB for same account & PNB is not able to reactivate old blocked card. But sites are not accepting our request , also bank is not supporting in this matter. Now all sites started to give threat that if transaction are not sucessfull than they will return the money to marchant.

Not able to understand wht to do. Please give the comment if u hv any solution

      Hi Omkar,

As you may know, giving out your details to somebody on the phone should never ever be done. It is good that you have filed a complaint with the police station. As of now, you must block your card and ask the bank for a new one as well. In this case, getting the money back may not be possible since you yourself gave out your details. However, the police will be able to guide and help you better in this matter. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do. We regret to inform you about that. We hope you get your money back soon.

He said that he is a customer service rep from one of the online phone recharge merchants ( dont wish to specify the name) and since my recharge failed he is refunding my account . He asked my card details and cvv along with the one time password. It was so foolish of me to not realise that he was trying for a transaction and he finally took 500 from my account. Agitated i abused that retard and called my bank immediately to block my card. And ordered for a replaced card Sir i want to ask can this guy misuse my account further from the new debit card i ordered.

      Hi,

Fortunately, since you have now got a new card, he cannot do any more damage. I would say that you are lucky that he only stole Rs. 500 and not more than that from you. In the future, please never give out your card details to anyone. There is no service that requires a person to ask for these details from a customer.

My statement shows store name as Newfurs at St Petersburgh Russia. I have lodged a complaint with the police and intimitated the credit risk department. My query is that when the bank statement shows the merchant outlet name and address why cant bank confirm with the account holder, if he or she is making this suspicious transaction in some country far, far away from India. I think it should be manadatory to confirm from the account holders before honoruing any transaction. Bank people have the records that first the hacker tried to swap 1.5Lakhs and then 75K and finally he succeded with 32900Rs as my acct only had 50000Rs luckily. Please advise and how to go about recovery. I dont have faith in these HDFC bank people. Worst bank with worst internet server security.

Sir, A recent case has taken place for hacking of my account by a call from unknown person impersonating as Bank of Baroda employee where I am holding my account. He gave me the details of ATM cards initial 16 digits and said that your password has been changed by Bank and asked me the old password which I told him. After half an hour messages started pouring in of small withdrawals from my account which I enquired about with my colleagues who said that the amounts are being transferred to new password account after my narration of the phone call from Bank. But someone knowledgeable asked me to enquire Bank and there they revealed that this was a fraud taking place with my account and it was my mistake to reveal my password. At the end I was cheated of 90,000/- Rupees which were withdrawn online in small amounts of 1000 to 5000 range of various transactions. As per your narration above I was told by bank to contact police and file a complaint wherein police said that there was the remotest of chances to recover money. To my amazement police hires private persons for detecting such crimes and we have to pay for their fees . I suppose there might be some cell for these kind of frauds and if they are not dealt seriously such persons get more confidence in doing so. Kindly revert back with some highlight on my case and what steps should be followed. To inform you one more thing is that the person who had impersonated as Bank employee has his cell no. on till date and also had talked on it 2 to 3 times and said that you money would get transferred at midnight which I knew it wont happen. Till date that cell no. is working that means he is not afraid of being tracked or there a way you can suggest to link up. Do help please with your experience in such cases. Thanks

If you can show them the FIR and prove that this was a fraudulent transaction, they may agree to reimburse you. But this depends from case to case. You will also need to persist with the authorities and see how they can help you out in this matter. We sincerely hope you are able to retrieve your money soon.

  143. hi,
i got a sms on my registered mobile from icici bank that a purchase of Rs.49669 was made on flipkart and my account has been debited on 10th january(saturday) at 10.56pm.i never use my debit card for online transaction and i had the card with me. i called up icici bank and immediately blocked my card and said this is a fraud transaction.my service request was generated.i also called up flipkart and told them about this transaction but they said they will revert within 24 hours.i mailed my service request no. of icici bank to flipkart also. next day(sunday) i lodged an FIR with local police station. Today 12th january 2015 ,on monday i visited the branch with FIR.in the meantime flipkalt calls me today saying the fraudster who made purchase from my debit card had asked for 24hours delivery and the goods have been delivered to him at 5.00pm on sunday(inspite of me mailing and calling flipkart to stop the delivery on sunday before 5.00pm, because of their system delay they cudnt stop the delivery, however flipkart promised full cooperation for taking back the good. I have my own dowbt how much of it is poosible). The bank has taken my complaint.I didnt recieve any sms or 3d pin generation massage on my mobile which clearly indicates that there has been a security brach at the bank level.
please tell me what else can I do? I am comtemplating going to consumer forum and RBI bank ombudsman. please guide if there is anything else I can do since i have acted promptly from my side. thanks in advance

Someone used my credit card for a 10K on 25th Jan, they tried transactions with 19K, 25K, 40K. As i didn’t had that much balance, there 2 5k transactions went successful. i called up the ICCI customer care immediately, they told they will be tracking it and they need 30 days to process this request.

After reading this post i see that, getting money back from this online hacking is zero or do i have any chance of getting back my money??.

      Hi Deep,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience in detail. This is a new trick by attackers to gain confidential information from victims. You should now spread the word and always remember that credit/debit card details should never be shared via phone. No bank or authority will ever call and ask for these details over a phone call. These attackers use such tricks and fool people but spreading awareness and sharing such incidents is the best possible way to repel such attacks in the future.

      Best regards.

Firstly, you should block all your bank accounts immediately. This includes online banking as well and change all your passwords for your accounts. Secondly, you should visit your local police station and file an FIR regarding this. Finally, visit your bank with this FIR and get them to help you trace down this attacker. Hi Sweety,

The sender of the amount will need your account number, name, branch name and IFSC code. After that, the bank will verify if this information is correct and this takes approximately 12 hours. Only once this is done, can a person transfer money into another account.

Since you have mentioned here that the merchant seems to be located in Italy, it is clear that the merchant is not the same as the one where you carried out your last transaction. So please ignore my previous comment about approaching that store. In this case, only the bank or police can help you. Hi Deepak,

In your statement is this the same POS purchase detail as the legitimate transaction you had made some time before? If yes, then the fraudulent transaction was definitely held at the store. You need to approach the store manager and talk to him about this and say you will involve the police and file a complaint in that case. If the details are different then there is no way of knowing who has carried out this transaction. In that case, only the police or your bank can help you out. We wish you all the best.

If they are not helping you out, visit your local police station and file an FIR for this loss and then visit your bank with this FIR to convince them. I just saw my bank statement and they charged me again another 30. The best thing know is to go to the bank and get another card with a different number on it and explain to them what is going on. The steps you have taken seem to be correct and that is all you can do right now. It is good that you have immediately blocked the card. If possible, you should consider transferring the money from that account into another account, if the amount involved is high. This will help you get some peace of mind. While i was on call with customer care for blocking my debit card, 3 more transactions happened and before that fellow blocked the card i was debited with a total of Rs.1 Lac. I told Standard chartered that someone has misused the card and told them to reverse the transaction.

I put my all efforts in investigation for continuous 8 hours and found out that initially criminal bought flipkart voucher from GiftBig.com and then redeemed that on Flipkart. He has ordered 2 iphones from flipkart. I persuaded Giftbig & Flipkart to consider my case on cancel the transactions. Since it was sunday, standarchartered bank had not started investigations. Finally after lots of efforts , flipkart agreed to put order on hold and reversed the transaction. Luckily , iphones were not shipped. Now Flipkart has assured me that they will keep it on hold till they hear from my bank.

I have been to police station and officer told me to come with complain tomorrow.

I know person’s mobile number, address and email id which he used with flipkart for order. How much chances i have to get my amount back?? and what further course of action i should take?

    • You have already done a good job of stopping the transaction at Flipkart. You have full chance of getting your money back. You try to talk to the support of GiftBig.com payment gateway providers and explain your story and get the transaction reverted to your account. They may have to invalidate the vouchers that were issued. For that you may need to get help from your bank. Since it is a debit card it is going to be difficult but still you can try your luck. About reaching out to criminals, you will have to take the help of local police to reach out to the cyber criminal whose contact information you already have.

Today my mother account was hacked by a phone call and debited Rs 25,000.

My mother received a call from a unknown number stating that he is calling from IRCTC to refund your money for waiting ticket. We had one waiting ticket, dont know how they know about that but my mother provided the card details and wrongly told him about the PIN.

In just 5 minutes RS 25,000 was debited.

Can they be recovered by any chance, i have made a complaint with cyber cell but no response, i had blocked the card.

Please resply on my e-mail ID if any possibility.

      Hi Suresh,

While we cannot guarantee that you will get your money back in this case, here is what you should do. Approach your local police station and file an FIR immediately, if you have not already done so. Speak to the cyber cells and file a complaint with them regarding this case – https://cybercrimecomplaints.com/cyber-crime-cells-india. Lastly, keep following up with eBay to see if they can follow up with this case and help you retrieve your stolen cash. Also tell your bank about this and block your card as soon as you can.

      Hi Parul,

Here are a few things you can do. Lodge an FIR with your local police station. Share a copy of that FIR with your bank, and with each of these merchants individually. If they are convinced that the transactions are fake, they may consider refunding the money. However, we cannot comment on each scenario as it depends on the situation.

      Hi Himanshu,

It really depends on the amount, the time, the frequency and the nature of the fraudulent transactions. The first thing you should do is block your card, then you should contact your bank and tell them about this situation. Then file an FIR with your local police station and also approach Flipkart with this FIR. Hopefully, they will refund your stolen cash but we cannot guarantee that this will happen for sure.

I questioned it over and over to the bank and to the accountant and to my husband. The bank knows nothing, the accountant doesn’t respond and my husband says to leave it alone. The account had well into six figures in it. Because so much time has gone by I don’t know what I can do, but it still bothers me. I am leaving him over things like this so I guess it doesn’t matter now. It is the principal of it, I suppose. The bank was wrong to let this occur on a signature-only account.

In my case, Yesteday (30/11/205) I got a call from person claiming himself to be a member of SBI who needed information for re-issue of my ATM/Debit card. As the person had called me up on my registered number and told me the ATM card number, I didn’t suspect a foul play. He asked me to provide a verification code that would be sent to by phone. Later I got a message with OTP password and I was not suspicious of sharing it over the phone, as bad luck would have it! Few minutes there after Rs 26000/= was debited from my account and I smelled a rat only then. I immediately called up the SBI customer service and blocked the ATM/Debit Card. The transaction details is something like this:

    POS 000000000169185 at snapdeal_PayU txn# 113019057563.

As per the direction of the bank, I called up Snapdeal but they replied that they don’t have a transaction with the above number. I am following up with PayUmoney to see if the above is a transaction done through them and if it can be reversed. Does anyone who/what is the Merchant ID looking at the above info ?

How can I find out the Merchant and reverse the above transaction. It happened yesterday 5 PM, so is there any chance of getting the money back ?

    Thanks,
    Ramesh

      Hi Ramesh,

Thank you for sharing this experience. It seems this is a new trick that is being used by scammers to trick people and rob their money. They must have got your phone number and ATM number through some social engineering trick or through some online portal where you conducted some transaction in the past. This is very unfortunate. We hope you have approached your local police station and informed them about this. Also spread the word to your family and friends about this incident and tell them to never share such details with any one over the phone, no matter what they say. This is something that people really need to know to avoid such cases. We cannot comment on whether your money will be refunded to you, so we wish you the best of luck with the recovery process.

That is a huge amount and this is a matter to be highly concerned about. Unfortunately, we cannot answer your questions in detail as this is a matter to be handled by law enforcement agencies. The steps you should take involved filing an FIR with your local police station and sharing the phone number from which your parents were called, visiting the bank with the FIR and requesting them to look into your case and you can also try speaking with the Indian Cyber Cell for more information. We sincerely hope that you are able to retrieve this amount successfully.

We are sorry to hear about your misfortune. As you have already blocked your card, the next step is to lodge a police complaint. Also, take regular followups with the bank so that they can help you find a solution to the problem. In most cases, scammers clone ATM cards by stealing the information present on the magnetic strip. The most common way this happen is through a fake card reader installed illegally at ATMs or card machines at merchant’s shops.

We are sorry to learn about this misfortune of yours. Have you contacted the bank regarding this? Every ATM has a camera on it so the bank officials ca investigate if the person who withdrew the money was you or not. So, kindly speak to your bank and explain the situation to them. Hopefully, they will be able to help you out.

  210. Hi,

I have already posted my case on 2nd of oct 2015 about fraud money transfer. I have filed the FIR and also complained in HDFC bank. From that time bank people are saying they are investigating the case. Now i don’t have any hope that i will recover my money.

Can u suggest me any way to recover my money. Can I go for consumer forum for this incident. It is responsibility of bank to provide safe banking to customers.

    Please suggest some way.

If you are not getting any respite from your bank, then going to the consumer court would be a viable step to take.

We never lost our debit card anywhere and bankbook is with us only. We have not done an online purchase or transaction. But 20000 debited from my fathers bank IOB account. Please me know is there any possibility to withdrawn the amount without using debit card and also confirm can we recover this amount by reaching out the IOB bank.

We cannot comment on this as it depends on a case to case basis and what all information you can submit to your bank. But yes, you should definitely visit your bank to see what they make of this situation and what assistance they can give you.

My fathers SBI bank debit card was stolen from the safe locker of his house by the thieves who broke in when no one was at home. The thieves used it immediately and withdrew 40000/- which is the days max. limit. When we got the message on his mobile we immediately blocked it. and since the card was not with him, we checked if the house is broken and it was found to be the case. He has never shared the PIN with anyone and it was not written anywhere in the house which was broken.

I wonder how the thieves could withdrew this money so soon after stealing the same and what next steps we can taken.

We are making a FIR for the lost card and the bank has confirmed the withdrawal from a location away from the theft location. Can we get out money back after checking the CCTV footage of the ATM and also looking at the FIR?

      Hi Amol,

Sorry to hear about this incident and the theft of your money. We cannot comment on whether or not the bank return this money. They view each case individually, and no one really knows on what basis they decide. The best you can do is collect as much information and proof as possible, and present a compelling case to the bank about this. All the best.

      Best Regards.

  214. Hi,

I hold a salary account with axis bank. On 28-03-2016 someone withdrawn 30,000/- rupees from this account through an ATM in Mumbai. I live in Baglore and I also have my debit card with me. This money I got it from my friends to pay my debts. Now I am left with 54 rupees.
Bank people blocked my card today(29-03-2016), and raised complaints and asked me to file a case in local police station.I have done the same and submitted the acknowledgment.
Now I want to know will the money will be refunded, as the bank told it will take some time to investigate this issue. I am very much worried and in a worst economical stage. Please help me.

I have also been victim of phishing phone call … while filling up form online for AIIMS MBBS entrance and fee payment confirmation not processed within 24 hours, then I lodged a complaint on AIIMS complaint forum. then some one called me giving my personal details so as to believe that he was from AIIMS. then he asked for my debit card details to refund my fee amount so that I could re-pay the fee to complete the form submission. I resisted couple of times but he convinced me that for online payment four-five details are required whereas he was only asking my ATM Pin … that too by new style (viz giving me three four numbers adding with PIN and let me know the total) I argued with him with regard to not providing my details. But I don’t know what happened to me when he black-mailed me in the name of my child’s not being able to take the exam … Thereafter I was emptied by 20,000/- which I reported to bank immediately. Bank blocked my account within half an hour of the loot. I also lodged an FIR in a week with police station. I was lucky enough to get my money back within 21 days. I was impressed with bank and police’s action.
however, this happiness turned evil when in another two weeks, 20,000/- was again withdrawn illegally. This time ATM was blocked and case for issue of new PIN number was with bank. I again complained to Bank branch, Regional manager, Central manager and police station. I thereafter, got Rs. 3492/- back but again Rs. 10,000/- withdrawn for the third incident. Total 27000/- loss to me .. bank and police both are unable to even replying me for once since the begining of the case two months back.
what to do next.. planning for RTI query for day to day action and progress at Bank level and why I was not given a single written reply from any level of my approach ?

kindly guide me what else could be done in this case

    Dear Sir

Since 1 year i want to recover my Rs.25000 from axis bank and the details is given below pls. help me to get my money back

    Dear concerned officer,

This is Ajay Kumar Dubey, account holder of Axis Bank, for more than last five years. I regret to inform you that
the impression I had with Axis bank is no more valid due to the incident
happened to me on 2nd May 2015.

On that day, someone transferred Re 1 (seems a trial)and subsequently
transferred 25000 rupee from my account to …. Unfortunately, there was no
one time password was received in order to execute the transaction (which
is supposed to be the procedure) or I received a sms about the transaction
on immediate basis(On normal course, it is received) . To my surprise, I
received a sms about the transaction after five hours.

Since then I am in touch with Axis bank team and running between pillar and
post . No one is even bother to respond to my queries. Since I got
frustrated, decided to go further( as a salary class person, I cannot afford
to lose such a big amount). On this regard I seek an advice from National
consumer disputes redressal commission and will go by their advice.

For your ready reference mail sent to ncdrc is as below

Considering the last five years relation I have with Axis bank, thought of
    bringing in to your notice.

    Regards

    Ajay Kumar Dubey.

  240. Hallo I have a problem and need your help.

    On 06/16/2016 I´ve been picketpocketed.
I was traveling in tramway in Prague,Czech republic. After I discovered my wallet was missing, I ran to the nearest shop , found someone from who I could call to the banks to block all my cards.I made a couple of phone calls. During that time,I phoned to my Slovak bank .He withdrew the Money 3 times from my another Norwegian bank. Soon after the first call, i called to my Norwegian bank to make sure no transaction was done. But it was too late. The pickpocket made unauthorized credit card withdrawal. He withdrew cca 800 Euro.
I was desperate.I have no idea how he knew my PIN code.
Than I went to the police station to make a report.I gave the police any and all information I had that might help them to locate the card thief. But Details of transactions I have had the opportunity to see up after four days.
After 4 days I got all information about unauthorized credit card transactions. I answered several detail questions, finally they typed up a summary of the incident reported. They asked me to sign it, I did. Police are working with the bank to obtain video surveillance of when the offender used the stolen card at area ATM’s.
    My card was insured.
I have to fill out the document about „transaction complaint“ send them all the documents I got from police and than write them my situation what happened.
I would like to ask you for some advice.
how to formulate the text to be the most convincing. My Norwegian bank said,Its not needed to translate them the Czech document from Police. They said I should send all them as they are.But now I have to write them something. But I need something to be profi.

I would be grateful for everything.Thank you.!

I really appreciate that you are helping people on giving the right advises.

Today my account was hacked and total amount of Rs. 85,000 got debited from my CITI bank SB account on various transactions. Most of the transactions were made to “Airtel” and “PAYTM”. I logged in a complaint to CITI bank within 24 hours and CITI bank people say it will take 48 hours to do the investigation. I am very much disappointed and scare on loosing my money since it is huge.

I request you to please guide me on how do I need to proceed further so that I can recover my money.

    Your advise is most appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Nishant

  262. Mr. Katkar,
On the 23rd of June 2016, a Rs. 15,005 transaction was made from my Canara Bank SB account. The debit card was used to make the transaction with a merchant in the US. There were no provisions for net or mobile banking on the card (also i haven’t used the card in over a year), i didn’t receive any notification regarding the same. I found out about the transaction only this month. The bank statement lists the transaction as PP*KEILASFASHIHOUSTONTXUS. An internet search for the merchant has turned up no clues. Are there any remedies or chances that the money can be recovered?

  271. Hi,
On 14th September,2016 there were two online purchases from my debit card which i was not making. Luckily I was able to recover all my money back!! 🙂
The card was with me the whole time so I knew something fishy was up and immediately blocked the card. I called the bank and reported the issue and registered a complaint to my local police station. I got a response from the bank saying they need 4 days to investigate. Meantime I started my own digging. I was able to know who were the merchants to whom the money was credited to as in the bank statement the merchant name was displayed as part of the transaction ID. I contacted both the merchants, one based in USA and another based in Honk Kong. The merchant from USA told me the order placed was declined and my money will be refunded which i have got already but the merchant from Honk Kong didn’t respond. So finally I tracked down their facebook page and posted on their wall so they will be forced to contact me. Finally when they did contact me they crossed checked the information after which they have initiated my refund and stop the order from reaching the culprit!!. I was also able to get the shipment address of the culprit and when i did a little bit of digging on that information I saw this person was already on the badbuyer’s list, reported for purchase from stolen/hacked credit cards and Debit cards!!!. I have now registered a complaint with International crime Complaint center(IC3) as the culprit is US based. I am waiting for contact from them. My tips for a person who is a victim for online card fraud:
    1. As mentioned in the post, TIME IS CRUCIAL. The faster you act better. Block all the cards on the account that is hacked.
    2. Contact the respective bank and get the procedures done
    3. Don’t wait for a saving grace, be your own saving grace. Be persistent. Try to track the transaction ID that shows up on your bank statement/SMS. If the merchant name is not provided then ask the bank for the details. Maybe they might have.
    4. Contact the merchants as soon as possible and stop the order from being dispatched!!. If the order is shipped then the merchant might not agree to refund the amount
    5. And finally prevention is better than cures. So, I have decided to open an account which is specific to only online purchase. Will the balance can be kept to bare minimum and transfer money as and when required and use it immediately. So even if the account is hacked they wont have much to take. I have decided to open an account in national banks as they have low minimum balance requirement. In my case I have a Punjab national bank general account where the minimum is just 1000.Rs.

I wish good luck to all those facing this issue. I hope you can get your hard earned money back 🙂

To the author of this article- Great work!!. Motivated me to take matters into my own hands 🙂

Last week i had a new Debit card issued on the Wednesday. I used this card once only to take cash from an ATM.
Thursday and Friday i tried to book a holiday online with Expedia (used them lots of time with no problem)When i got to payment it refused to accept my details saying that my details were wrong.
On Saturday i went to my bank and told them and the Assistant told me that i need a special key to use my account online.
She gave me the key and set up the account.
when i got home i tried again to book online but no use at all. I checked my account later and found that 4 transactions had taken place for over $2,000 each and many more were refused.
i did not get an opportunity to use my new code and everytime was told that my transactions had not worked.
I stopped the card as soon as i knew but it was too late to save nearly $9,000.
I went back to the bank on the Monday (3 hours each way in a taxi) The Assistant said that my card had been used for these transactions and many more had been tried and refused.
She did not offer any help at all and although my Spanish is not great i could understand what she was saying which was basically “bad luck”
i have written to the bank and await their reply. do you think i have any chance of getting my money bank ?
I cannot believe that they refused me payment but seemed to dish it out easy to a hacker.
I did not use my pin number or even the code that she gave me because i could not get that far.
    regards
    john

Yes. I am presently handling a case of fraudulent ATM withdrawal from an account of my close relative to the tune of INR 1.96 LACs. The Hacker made ATM withdrawal in CNY [China] currency while my relative was handling a moderately serious domestic issue at Bengaluru and completely ignored all SMS alerts. By the time she realized it was too late. The banker was reported and we filled up the necessary DISPUTE FORM. We have also lodged a Police Complaint. We are waiting for the end results.

From the call time in the next 30mins 10 transaction each valued at 30,000 went on. Next day we approached bank, they said the transaction is done online using debit card detail and debit pin no. (there was no OTP), bank is not owning responsibility, we have given case through cyber cell. we sent mail to Vodafone who was the beneficiary of the payment (for Vodafone Mpesa accounts the money was transferred), we complained the bank with in 14hrs and registered complaint with police within 24hrs, still no hopes.

Bank says there is no need for OTP if its verified by PIn, the card was never used on online previously, then how the details were known. RBI regulation states OTP is must for online transaction to be processed, but the bank denies it.

    • Good morning Sir
On Friday the 21st of oct, I finished my exams and wanted to go for my vacation very early on Saturday morning, and as such was expecting 3000 pesos from a friend, so after my exams in the evening I slept for a while and when I woke up, I went to the ATM to check my account, what I saw was below what I was expecting, its just 1000 pesos, so I called him and told him why only 1000 pesos, he told me he has not send it, that he forget that I should jst wait for a while, that he will send it, that I should wait maybe after 20mins I should check, I went as he said. On reaching there I saw about 24,000 pesos, I called him and ask why that much??? He told me he never did, and beside he is having issues with his network. He told me maybe someone is mistaken my account to be someone else account, he said he will contact me if he send the money, meanwhile i withdrew the money, maybe a friend mistakenly send it so when he or she ask I will jst give, I waited for his call, but didnt get, I try calling him, his number wasnt going through. So I went to see if he did send since I cant get him. But this time I saw another set of money all in one night. I withdrew all ranging to abt 50k. I kept the money and went for vacation. While am there I called one or two people to ask if they did send in money, non said they did. I waited if some will call to claim no one did, so very worried about the situation, I cut my vacation short, came back to my home on Wednesday the 26th of oct, I arrived late so early in the morning on Thursday, I went to the bank with the 50k peso as it was withdrawned, explained my experience of how it happened, they checked and told me it came from one Harrison plaza, i said it came from a source which I didn’t have idea of they should resend the money back to where it came from. They deposited the money in my account, took my contact number and said if they resend it they will contact me, from that day till now have gone to that bank more than four times, the money is still in my account. What they did was to freeze the 50k so I can hav access to my normal money, what else should I do in this case ? Have been waiting and waiting but to no avail, I emailed there head office yesterday but haven’t gotten a report from them even. All this is happening in the Philippines

My grand mother has an account with SBH and she had a debit card for the same which she never used. Amount was kept for emergency purposes due to her old age and so not checked frequently. This year May when she tried to withdraw some money, it was seen that in May last year an amount of 2.5 lakhs was withdrawn from different ATMs. Card is withus only. When contacted the bank they told msg was gone to a phone number which does not belong to her. Further she never applied for phone banking also, but some phone number was written with different hand writing. Bank rejected the claim telling that my grand mother is transacting in her account with the help of her son. since she parted the possession of the card they will not accept to enquire. Police complaint also did not help. What is our next recourse. Pl guide since it is the amount saved by grand mother who is 79 year old for her old age .

I tried to find out my card but realised I had lost the card. I immediately reported to bank and filed an FIR with police but the bank told me that all the transactions are done via PIN and I didn’t received a single message about the transactions. Now the bank said the police will enquire from them to proceed but this procedure is long. The first transaction was made on 2 and then on 5 then on 8 Dec. I realised this on 10 Dec. What to do now. credit card Transaction is an illegal transaction as I received a fraud call from a person claiming to be a SBI representative. He asked me to share my card & PIN details also shared OTP unluckily. Though I have blocked the below mentioned credit card but transaction is already processed. I need your immediate intervention to block the payment to Paytm or let me know if there is any other way to get my money back. Also share me the details for Paytm account where the amount has been transferred. I am in process to raise a police complaint for the same.

Immediately after the call they made one big transaction using his card. As we were not aware how to handle the situation, we blocked the card, informed the bank and filed a complaint to the police. After reading this blog, we sent a request to the online portal where the transaction was made and explained the situation to them and they were very cooperative and in few days we got our money back. Had it not been for this blog, we would still be sitting and waiting for action on our complaint and couldn’t have avoided paying off the transaction.

  313. Thank you for this very useful and important information.

I am a recent victim of phishing were a fraudster called me saying that she is calling from the HDFC payback points department and that my points are going to get lappsed/expired. She offered me a cashback of 4999 and said that the same cannot be transfered to my HDFC Credit card account rather I can encash the points with my debit card.

I fell into the trap and made the mistake of sharing my card details along the OTP which she calimed was generated from her IVR system and not the bank.

She immediately changed the 3D secure pin for my debit card and made 5 transactions to Idea Money and Airtel Money of total Rs 25000. Each transaction amounting of Rs5000.

As soon as I got the debit sms’s from the bank I realized that I have been fooled and asked her about why the money is debiting from my account instead of the cashback being credited. She imediately cut the call and her phone was then switched off.

I immediately blocked all my Debit / Credit cards of all banks including Netbanking and informed the Bank’s Fraud department of what has happened.

I have even raised a transaction dispute form with the bank.

I event sent email to Idea Money and Airtel Money customer care email addresses hours after the incident happened but there is no reply.

I also went to local police station to file a complaint but they refused giving illogical reasons and blaming me for the lose.

Now I am just praying to GOD that some show this transaction gets reversed back to my account.

This is a lesson learnt for me as to how fraudsters can lure you with offers or threaten you with denial of service or service expiry and get your cards details from you.

But you should never be pressurized by such calls and should never attend such calls because bank will never call you and ask for your details.

      Hi Manoj,

You have taken the necessary steps. What you can do now is the following:

      1. Check your bank statement and find out the transaction IDs and name of the merchants where these payments were done.
      2. Once you are able to find the merchants, email them or call them and explain the situation.
      3. If these merchants provide you with any details, share these with the Police and the Bank.

Unfortunately in most cases, money lost to such fraud cases are difficult to recover. What we can do is take regular followups with the Police.

    Sir,

My father got a fake call from a person today representing himself as a Bank Manager with SBI. My father has a salary account with SBI. The person pretending to be the bank personal convinced my father with details like Card number, pan card number, Home address, last transaction etc. and then asked for OTP which my father gave him , there were a total of 6 transactions that happened for a total of 6 OTP amounting upto 17800, and then call was disconnected by the Spammer/hacker.

When my father checked for messages immediately after the call he realized that he has been scammed big time and immediately rushed to Bank from his office and when updated his Passbook he found out that the Transactions were made to transfer the funds to a Paytm Wallet Account.

Remedy measures – As of now after 4 hours of the incident ( approx. 12 pm 5th April 2017 ) My father along with my mother and brother have changed there ATM PIN and Net banking Login passwords.

Question now is – what do we do next ..?
Is there a way we can ask SBI to track down the transaction details and may be get the details from PAYTM to which account the funds were transferred and may be further transferred to another PAYTM Wallet/Bank Account..?
What does the Policy Authority will do..? Can they trace down the Caller and location may be and get the details from Operator to which ID it belongs to or registered to.?

Update: I became a spoof caller and pretended that I got a call earlier today and wanted to know about the Offer and called the Hacker and Look at his Confidence , he said currently office has been closed, but we will call you tomorrow to get the details.

    Please help anyone

I was recently scammed by greendot debit card my old debit card # I was having my paychecks direct deposit. I was online and made a purchase three weeks later realized that my account had been hacked. The one and only time that I was able to talk to a real human being. They cacelled that card and gave me 4 dispute #’s they are as follows 07573835,07574166,074448,07574549 I digure the amount to be approximately $700.00 They sent another debit card to me. When I tried to activate it it says that I have to sent them a copy of my D.L. or I.D. so I did. Then it said that my pictures were to blurry and to retry. I sent them at least 20 different pictures. This took place over a period of almost 120 days before I could activate my new card. When I was able to activate my new card it said that I had only $20 that I could withdraw. I haven’t taken the money out though on hopes of tying all of this together and possibly re-couping some of my money. Can you help? How do I go about getting any if my money back?

I went on to invest a total of $489,000 into 9 accounts as advised. When it was time for withdrawal i was unablt to perform any withdrawal, I thought my life has ended until i was referred to sokolov.swiftrecovery(at)gmail(dot)com…… They have been able to help me recover 90% of my funds as of last week. The scammers are all out for our wealth, stay guided and have a proof of your of transaction. You still have a shot at getting your funds back!….
