Got a WhatsApp video calling invite link? Beware it’s probably a spam!

Earlier this week, WhatsApp launched its video calling feature and the update is being rolled out to Android, Windows and iPhone users over the next few days. This update will allow users to make video calls to their contacts much similar to Skype and FaceTime. Shortly after the news of this update was out, a link has been circulating on WhatsApp which claims to be an invitation to enable the new feature. But be careful, this link is a spam to woo gullible users to click on the link.

Once you click on this link you may end up giving hackers unwanted access to your phone’s data, personal information and even putting your financial information at risk. You should stay clear of clicking on these dubious links as it is being widely circulated on WhatsApp.

The chances are that once you click on these kind of links you are directed to a website with malware and advertisements. This can put you at risk in multiple ways, one of them being phishing, where you may find the landing page of the link to be a legitimate website; it will ask you to fill personal information which will eventually be shared with hackers.

If you’re still curious how to get the video calling feature on WhatsApp, let us tell you that good things come to those who wait. Since the new feature is being gradually rolled out to all users you’re likely to get it sooner. If you haven’t opted for automatic updates on your smartphone, you can check if you’ve received the update by going to Play Store for Android users and App Store for iOS users. Once the application is updated you will be able to use the voice calling feature.

Until then, we urge you to beware of such malicious messages and if you do get one, make sure you inform the person sharing it that it’s a hoax. Do not encourage the spread of such messages. Share this article with your family and friends to inform them about this hoax being floated around on WhatsApp.

      Hi Savio,

If you have an antivirus already installed on your phone, you can run a scan of your device. If you don’t have one you can download it. Here’s the link to Quick Heal antivirus app: https://bit.ly/1DrBB6v. It is advisable to change your password periodically so if you feel your email address has been compromised or at risk you must change your password immediately.

Madam , Till date I experienced good service from QuickHeal & safely managing my smart phones. I am fed up with certain providers who repeatedly show the installation ad inspite of your advise not to install. We would be helpful if the warning message shown at the beginning & installation being controlled by you. Please inform me how to avoid such unwanted advertisements ? Thanks.
